DescriptionAdult fleas are 2-3 mm in length and generally of a shiny brown appearance. They have a thin, laterally flattened body and large hind legs which allow them to jump onto passing hosts. BiologyFlea eggs are about 0.5mm long, oval, pearly-white in colour and laid indiscriminately in the fur or feathers of the host or in its nest or bedding. Four to eight eggs are laid after each blood meal and a single female may produce 800 - 1000 eggs during her lifetime, which may be as long as two years. The larvae thrive in dark, humid places such as animal bedding and carpet fluff, and feed on organic debris and adult flea excrement. Cats' bedding may support a flea population of 8000 immature and 2000 adult forms. ControlEven where very high populations of fleas are present, a single application of insecticide at double strength will be sufficient. The insecticides that Verminate use are the safest available and do not pose any risk to people or pets. You will, however, be left with an information sheet about the insecticide used by the operative. The pest control officer will be able to give on site advice about any precautions that the occupant needs to take before and after treatment. Pre-treatment adviceAll floors and upholstered furniture should be vacuumed to remove animal hairs, organic debris, flea eggs and pupae. In most cases one treatment is enough even if you have pets such a cats or dogs. If you do have pets we recommend talking to your vet for a suitable animal flea treatment such as Frontline. As this in combination will quickly remove your problem. Pet bedding should also be washed above 60 degrees to kill all stages of the flea cycle. If you have a problem with fleas, Verminate can help you! Contact us today for more information. |
